This week was really an eye opener for me. As I’ve mentioned before, I have tried many of the quick weight loss fads. And they work! I would do them for as long as the program advertised (90 days, 30 days, whatever they may be) and I would get comments about my weight loss. Usually they were something like, “You’ve lost weight, haven’t you!”. Or, “You look skinnier. How much weight have you lost?” But I am getting different comments and twice this week, I got completely different compliments that I had never received before.
While taking a road trip down to Austin for a UT game, we stopped at a very popular gas station/food stop (Buccee’s) to fill up and grab a snack. As I was getting a small bag of beef jerky, the woman behind the counter asked me, “Do you mind if I ask how old you are?” I was a little surprised because I really didn’t know where she was going with this. After telling her, she commented, “You really look fit. I was guessing you were younger. You’re very fit.” I was obviously very flattered, thanked her and told her she made my day!
That same evening, while at the game, my friend from high school who was attending the game with us made a similar comment. “You working out more? You looking really fit.” Fit, again. No mention of weight loss, even though I am down over 20 pounds.
So why the difference? I admit I am following workout plans that are much different from my normal routine which I had been doing for years with really no results. I am lifting heavier and easing up on cardio which I’m sure attributes to the change in body as well. I am also not just eating to lose weight. The weight loss is just a result of the lifestyle change. So I am accomplishing exactly what I set out to and that was to get more lean and lose some body fat.
I don’t know this as a fact but from what I’ve been told, in the past it was easy to see the weight loss in my face. I am guessing this has a lot to do with losing water weight and I know that happened the first couple weeks of going low carb but I’m guessing that’s slowing down. Only because I have been expecting people to comment on my weight loss but it has not been as often as I thought it would. As I said, I am getting more “you look fit” comments.
This has really inspired me as it tells me that what I’m doing is working. I am getting leaner, stronger and gaining muscle. I definitely do not feel like someone in their mid fifties and am going to keep with that attitude. I will not let society tell me I am too old or just give up and use it as an excuse. Whatever I am capable of doing physically, I am going to do it and push hard to find my limits. I truly believe that if you know in your mind it can be done, you can push yourself to accomplish things you’ve always dreamed in the past. So just get up and move. It’s a great start to GETTING FIT!
